Four new biogas fuel stations have been set up in Stockholm within Trendsetter. This has made fuelling much more convenient for drivers of biogas cars and given private companies a chance to choose biogas vehicles in their fleets.
Fuelling possibilities is necessary to create a market for biogas vehicles. But the market for selling biogas has been too small and non-profitable in Stockholm. Therefore, four new fuelling stations for biogas have been built in Stockholm within Trendsetter. They are placed in important business districts where there used to be no possibilities to fuel biogas.
All four stations are located at existing fuel stations for petrol and diesel in order to give the biogas customers access to the same service as ordinary petrol and diesel customers. Special studies were carried out regarding suitable locations for the stations and less expensive refuelling technique. The new stations mean a great improvement of the infrastructure for biogas in Stockholm.
Three of the new stations have been built by the gas company AGA Gas AB and one by Statoil. AGA Gas has provided a new, innovative, flexible and mobile fuel supply system. This is a remote-monitored system with swap-body fuel units that are easy to replace – a system of great importance in a region like Stockholm lacking a natural gas grid.
Still, there is a need for additional fuelling stations. The City of Stockholm works closely with several private partners in order to improve the situation. According to current plans there will be 12–15 fuelling stations for biogas in operation in two years time, which will serve more than 1,000 vehicles. [stämmer sifforna och tidsperspektivet?] This will, not the least, give many private companies a possibility to choose clean vehicles in their fleets. Within five years, the goal is to extend the stations to a belt across Sweden, in cooperation with a gas company based in the west of Sweden, and to finally build a national network.
