High marks for clean vehicles

Drivers of clean vehicles in Stockholm are more than pleased with their choice. This was revealed in a new survey conducted among approximately 400 drivers. Clean cars exceeded expectations, and 80 percent of the drivers would like to recommend other motorists to choose a clean alternative.

Approximately 400 drivers of clean vehicles in Stockholm were asked about their experiences. Clean vehicles are fuelled by biogas, ethanol, electricity or a combination of electricity and petrol (electric hybrids). The survey shows that more than half of the drivers (60 %) have changed their attitude towards clean vehicles after receiving first-hand experience. Only 10 % hold a more negative view today. Advantages mentioned include reduced emissions and lower noise levels.

"It is very gratifying that as many as 80 % of clean car drivers are so pleased that they would recommend others to choose this type of vehicle. This is significant in our drive to increase the use of vehicles run on renewable fuels," says Eva Sunnerstedt at Clean Vehicles in Stockholm.

Drivers of ethanol fuelled cars and hybrid cars are among the most satisfied, with as many as 90 % recommending others to drive similar vehicles. Also, 90 % of the drivers see clean vehicles as a good environmental initiative.

Drivers taking part in the survey work both in the private and public sectors. The purchase of clean cars is subsidised through funds from the EU project Trendsetter. Businesses in Stockholm can still apply for funding towards buying clean vehicles. Funding constitutes 30 % of the additional cost compared to a petrol-fuelled car. Applications must reach Miljöförvaltningen (Environment and Health Administration) no later than 30 September.

The above results originate from a survey conducted in March, 2004. The survey addressed 370 drivers of a total of 240 vehicles. The full report can be downloaded from:
