Stockholm has introduced eight new biogas fuelled lorries for waste collection. Besides the environmental benefits, the biogas lorries make less noise and smell less. Drivers are satisfied and an additional 22 biogas waste trucks have already been ordered.
Stockholm's Old Town had two biogas waste collection lorries operating before Trendsetter. The vehicles have been greatly appreciated both by drivers and by residents, especially because they are so much quieter compared to diesel lorries. Since the waste collection takes place from early morning, residents value much that they are less disturbed by noise. For drivers, the reduced noise means better working conditions.
Within Trendsetter, the City of Stockholm Waste Management Administration has replaced another eight diesel waste collection lorries with biogas vehicles. Since all waste collection lorries are owned by contractors, the city has achieved the replacement by requiring that the contractors operate one or two biogas waste collection lorries. The contractors have also received Trendsetter co-financing for extra costs for biogas collection lorries, up to a total of eight to ten vehicles in the project.
Out of the total of Stockholm’s 85 waste collection vehicles, almost 12% now run on biogas. They have showed to be reliable in service. No shutdowns or technical problems have been reported due to the use of biogas. Besides less noise and smell, the biogas vehicles also produce a smaller amount of pollutant emissions. On the other hand, acceleration and range are not as good as in diesel trucks. All in all, though, the drivers are satisfied and also feel good about the clean vehicles initiative.
